Welcome to Sixth Grade at St. Mary's of the Annunciation!
I believe in Christianity as I believe that the sun has risen:
not only because I see it, but because by it I see everything else.
-C.S. Lewis
This year in English class we will be exploring the poetry and literature of great authors from both the United States as well as Great Britain. We will also be working hard to improve our grammar usage, especially in dealing with pronouns and making sure we have correct subject/verb agreements in all of our sentences. In addtion, we will be working to develop our writing skills using the John Collins Writing Program. Writing with voice and demonstrating a strong introduction and conclusion in our writing pieces will be a focus as well.
In Social Studies, we will be learning about Ancient Civilizations. Mesopotamia, Ancient Israel, Egypt and Nubia, Greece and Rome as well as Ancient China and Byzantium will be explored.
As part of the Religion curriculum this year, our Sixth Graders will be participating in the monthly Friday morning masses as members of the choir. Their voices fill the air with God's love. We certainly hope you will be able to join us on these holy days. In addition, Religious projects will focus around the lives of the Saints and exploring how our own lives mimic the life of Christ. Sixth graders conclude the year with an exciting multi-media project on comparative religions. In addition to serving and collecting food for the Servant's Heart food pantry, Sixth graders will also prepare, package and deliver meals to our own Melrose homeless who are living in motels. These experiences will combine to strengthen the souls of all students and focus on creating a life long love of giving and living a life as a true servant for Christ.
